Verena La Mela currently is a PhD candidate at the department “Integration and Conflict” at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle/Saale, Germany. Her doctoral thesis deals with inter-ethnic relationships among Russians, Kazakhs and Uyghurs as well as social change in Southeastern Kazakhstan. Her thesis is supervised by Prof. Dr. Peter Finke and Prof. Dr. Günther Schlee. Verena received a Master’s degree in Cultural Anthropology (major), Modern Sinology and Modern Indology from Heidelberg University, Germany. She spent three semesters studying abroad in China (Shanghai International Studies University and Yunnan University) and The Netherlands (Leiden University). For her Magister-thesis she conducted fieldwork among Chinese migrants in Northern Laos, her main goal was to identify prevailing discourses of (ethnic) identities.
