Meltem Sancak studied Sociology and Anthropology at the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, and at Cologne University (MA 1999). She conducted field research on life perspectives of second-generation migrants from Turkey in Germany. Together with Peter Finke she also worked among Kazaks who had migrated from China to Kazakhstan after the latter’s independence. In 2000 she joined the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology where she is doing research in Uzbekistan on the relationship between economic change and social identities.
